When we know ourselves to be connected to all others, acting compassionately is simply the natural thing to do.

Welcome to Blue Halycon Films LLC - Wildlife Conservation at its best

I’m Sharyn Umaña, a conservation documentary filmmaker dedicated to telling powerful stories where wildlife, wild places, and people intersect. Since 2010, I’ve partnered with leading conservation organizations and journeyed to more than 67 countries, capturing the beauty, complexity, and urgency of our natural world. With a Master’s degree in Conservation Biology and a Bachelor’s in Film & Television, I combine scientific depth with cinematic storytelling to create films that move audiences and spark meaningful action. From remote landscapes to vibrant communities, my work celebrates the profound connection between Mother Nature and Human Nature. In between film projects, I can be found working onboard National Geographic-Lindblad Expedition ships, editing African safari videos for Wilderness Destinations, or capturing the beauty of Wisconsin’s Northwoods with Wild Empress Expeditions. I’m also a drone pilot, SCUBA-certified, and I’m always looking for the next adventure!

Do you remember the first time you saw a wildlife documentary that truly resonated with you?

Maybe it was an episode about penguins on BBC’s documentary series, Frozen Planet with David Attenborough, or Steve Irwin rescuing a sea turtle on an episode of The Crocodile Hunter — or yet another wildlife warrior entirely. But chances are that at one time, you watched a nature show and have a distinct memory of being moved and inspired.

Video plays a crucial role in bringing the beauty and complexity of the natural world to global audiences by sparking curiosity and a deeper appreciation for the planet. Powerful storytelling can educate viewers about wildlife, highlight the challenges they face, and celebrate the efforts of local communities working to protect them.

Sharing real-world stories of animal biodiversity can empower people to carry the torch of environmental stewardship and become advocates for a more sustainable future. I am here to be part of this ecological revolution — to tell stories that cultivate understanding and foster a new generation of conservation crusaders.
